One of the main aspects of Porto experience is drinking Porto wine.
This wine has become famous thanks to widespread use and import made in England in conflict imes; in my opinion it reaches its maximum expression when served on the riverside (Douro) in the Ribeira district, a UNESCO heritage site, but I’ve read that the best one is sold in the wineries of the opposite bank, in the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia, port born in 1834 from the merger of Vila Nova and Vila Gaia.
The alcohol content is quite high because of a technique (the mutation), which stops the fermentation by the addition of alcohol derived from the distillation of the ‘marc’.
However in its lighter versions it can also be used as a meditation wine (be careful, in certain periods of life it will make you maditate too much). It can be sipped as an aperitif or paired with desserts, especially chocolate, or cheese and jam.
Let’s go with the wineries to savor the best selections of the various types of Vinho do Porto (white – my favorite -, ruby, tawny, pink – the more recent)
